Celebrating the life of
Caroline Barton Ross
November 03, 1920 - February 27, 2011
Caroline B. 'Bett' Ross
SAVANNAH – Caroline B. "Bett" Ross was born, in Albany, New York, on the third of November to a Catholic beat cop and an Irish scullery maid. Bett was adopted and raised with much love by George and Clara Barton in Schenectady, NY and she passed from this life on the 27th of February, 2011 in Savannah, Georgia.
She grew up in the Depression, where 25% of the population of this marvelous country of ours was out of a job, understanding the value of hard work, education and responsibility to family and country.
She graduated from the Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing in 1942 and went to war as an Army operating room nurse supporting George Patton's 3rd Army during the Battle of the Bulge in an Army field hospital in Reims and Verdun France.
Bett met and married the love of her life, an Army Air Force pilot, William O. Ross, in Atlantic City, NJ and married him in Grand Island, Nebraska by Chaplain Goldbrick. She raised a military family, often alone and raised us to be responsible, caring, giving, independent and resourceful. She never made it back "up home", one of the many of us who have many houses and but one home.
The Burial Office, Requiem and Eucharist will be held in the Chapel of Saint Mary the Virgin, St. John's Church, 1West Macon Street, Savannah, Georgia on Thursday the 3rd of March at 2 PM, Father Craig E. O'Brien presiding. Reception will follow in the Parish House. Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery with her best friend, lover and husband.
She is preceded in death by her husband and is survived by two daughters, Deirdre Darnall, and Carolyn Bulliner; a son, Bill Ross; 6 grandchildren and two great grandsons.

Betty and her entire family have been a nice connection in my families life since around 1969.Her story is as American as i can possibly imagine. We will all miss her authentic and crusty character. very respectfully. joeL newman

I only met Betty a couple of times when I was young, but I remember her being very much like my mother, a strong, vivacious woman. I am so sorry for your loss.
